Linda Lovelace is quite probably the original porn star. She not only defined the term porn star, but she also broke ground in the performance of certain sex acts in porn. Born on January 10, 1949 to a working-class family in the Bronx, New York, she attended several private Catholic schools growing up, and earned the nickname “Miss Holy Holy” due to her propensity to keeping her boyfriends at a chaste distance. She was involved in a serious car accident in New York as a young adult, and had to receive a blood transfusion to save her life; unfortunately this was a mixed blessing, as the transfusion left Linda infected with hepatitis. She became involved in an abusive relationship with her first manager, Chuck Traynor, and soon after began appearing in 8mm silent “loops,” hardcore short films shown at early peep shows. In 1972, Linda starred in the vintage classic Deep Throat, in which she performed the eponymous act. The film became a cultural sensation, even being reviewed in the New York Times. Nowadays, it's hard to imagine watching a blowjob film in which the performer doesn't deepthroat a cock. Hell, it's hard to imagine getting a blowjob in private in which a deepthroat isn't performed. Sadly, after Linda left Traynor, she alleged that many of her performances under his management were literally coerced at gunpoint. After this dark period in her career, she also starred in the film Linda Lovelace for President, which featured Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees. She also posed for magazines such as Playboy and Esquire during her heyday. Later in her life, she became an anti-pornography activist. It was a terrible shame that such a legendary figure had such a terrible experience in pornography, but her exposure of the seedy side of the industry has helped pave the way to such female-positive porn practices as espoused by many of today's female producers as Joanna Angel and Belladonna. Linda was involved in another car accident in 2002, and was taken off of life support three weeks later, on April 22, 2002 at the age of 53.
