Tinto Brass (AKA: Giovanni Brass) is a legendary Italian director who is best known for his erotic softcore films. He was born on March 26, 1933, in Milan, Italy. As a child, his grandfather gave Giovanni the nickname Tintoretto, which he later shortened to Tinto. His early career in the '60s and '70s was marked by the release of many of his more avant-garde works, such as Nerosubianco and L’urlo. His films are known for their impressionistic style, eschewing wide shots and landscapes for a more microscopic look at the film. This gives the viewer a feeling of greater immersion. His other trademark is the use of a multi-camera system, usually only popular for television productions, which gives him a more diverse choice of angles to use from any given take. Tinto is perhaps best known for his later works, and most of them are erotic in nature. Several of his more well-known works include Cosi fan tutti (released in English as All Girls Do It), and the epic, star-studded production Caligula. That film was a collaboration between Brass, Penthouse magazine publisher Bob Guccione (most famous for printing candid nude photos of stars such as Madonna, and for its infamous spread of then-underage Traci Lords), and renowned historical auteur Gore Vidal. The film also features respected actors Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole and Helen Mirren. Tinto ultimately demanded that his name be stricken from the credits after hardcore sex scenes were mixed in post-production. Tinto has directed films as recently as 2009, and he is still shooting movies today.
